the history of eventide wellness
About EvenTide Wellness
Liana Brooks-Rubin and Crystal Kaplan have joined together to create a space for both individual healing and expansion as well as community- and global-level transformation. We first met in 2007 while pursuing careers at the State Department and more specifically, through working on refugee and humanitarian policy and programming issues in the Middle East and South Asia. While our work in this field (ongoing in various ways) was valuable, we realized together a strong mutual passion to dive into alternative healing and personal and spiritual growth. We both chose to leave the government and pursue careers in acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, yoga teaching, functional medicine, massage, and craniosacral therapy amongst others.
In 2017, after years of planning and discussing a partnership, Liana and Crystal began manifesting their vision to create a wellness center in downtown Washington D.C. that combines our focus on individual healing (through acupuncture, herbal medicine, massage, craniosacral therapy and other services) with our compassionate activism at the community and global levels through classes, workshops and retreats.
As of May 2018, we are thrilled to welcome a second practitioner of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, Jamie Wick. Please check our website periodically for updates about new additions to our community, as well as expanded service offerings.
Liana Brooks-Rubin, EvenTide Wellness Founder and Co-Owner
L.Ac., Dipl.O.M. (NCCAOM), RYT-500
Liana is nationally certified as a Diplomate of Oriental Medicine. She is a licensed acupuncturist, practitioner of Chinese Herbal Medicine, registered yoga teacher, and founder of EvenTide Wellness in Washington, D.C.
Liana is dedicated to deepening her study and practice of Classical Chinese Medicine. Since completion of her Master’s Degree in Oriental Medicine, she has pursued this primarily through study with Jeffrey Yuen, 88th generation Daoist Priest of the Jade Purity Tradition, as well as more recently with Andrew Nugent-Head, founder of the Association for Traditional Studies based in Asheville, NC. In order to combine the deep wisdom of Chinese Medicine with the benefits of Functional Medicine, Liana enrolled in an Integrative Health Coach program at the Academy of Integrative Medicine and will begin to offer Functional Medicine services to her patients in the fall of 2018. Liana has been a dedicated student of Iyengar yoga since 2000 and has taught alignment-based Hatha yoga since 2004.
While Liana enjoys treating a wide variety of issues, she specializes in women’s health, including gynecology, fertility, pregnancy, postpartum care, and menopause, as well as a host of conditions stemming from chronic stress, trauma, poor diet and/or lack of adequate rest, including anxiety, depression, insomnia, GI issues, chronic migraines, autoimmune conditions, chronic fatigue and complex pain syndromes.
Liana is an in-network provider for BCBS/CareFirst, Cigna, Aetna, and United insurance.
Liana’s first career was as a humanitarian and diplomat with the U.S. Department of State, with a regional focus on the Middle East and South Asia. Throughout her tenure at the State Department, she contributed to the efforts of the U.S. government and international community to improve conditions and policies for millions of refugees and internally displaced persons.
Liana receives immense joy from helping her patients live full, healthy lives. She lives in Washington, DC with her husband and two sons.
Crystal Kaplan, EvenTide Wellness Co-Owner
Registered Craniosacral Therapist, Usui Reiki Master, Certified Massage Therapist, Ordained Minister
Crystal entered into healing work from a desire to help others discover their innate perfection and inherent health. She feels strongly that bringing awareness, acceptance and compassion to ourselves allows for physical and emotional healing. She is a practicing Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist, Certified Massage Therapist, Usui Reiki Master, meditation guide and ordained minister.
Crystal moved to Washington D.C. in 1997 to attend graduate school, where she met her husband. Together, they joined the U.S. State Department as Foreign Service Officers in 1999. While working with Bhutanese and Tibetan refugees in Nepal and Palestinian refugees in the Middle East, Crystal began to hear the call to deepen her level of understanding, awareness, and compassion for herself and the world around her. Upon moving to Washington, D.C. in 2010, she began studying massage therapy, Reiki and Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy. She graduated from the Potomac Massage Training Institute in 2011 and left the State Department in 2012 in order to devote herself fully to healing work.
Crystal believes that our world (Gaia) is shifting into new dimensional states of being and we are shifting along with her. These shifts can sometimes feel chaotic and disconcerting while at other times joyful and energizing. Crystal is inspired to assist and support the changes you are experiencing, including the release of old patterns that no longer serve your higher purpose. With this goal in mind, she works from an energetic yet practical perspective rooted in anatomy and physiology and informed by the subtle movement of energy through our bodies. Our bodies are beautiful vehicles for our spirits, allowing us to explore and experience our world. When we are able to embrace all of our experiences, fears, and emotions, we begin to feel free and empowered and can fully realize ourselves as the masterful beings that we are.
Jamie Wick, LAc., Dipl.Ac.
Jamie has traveled and lived in diverse places throughout the world, and through her travels, she has observed and internalized the deep connection to nature held by many cultures. Jamie has studied medicine in different contexts for many years, including experience learning and working with traditional Mexican medicine.
Before becoming an acupuncturist, she lived in Mexico and worked in the field of human rights. She loved this work and also realized that traditional medicine, like Chinese medicine, would offer a greater service to humanity. She now loves seeing people come alive, learn more about themselves, gain new awareness and grow through acupuncture.
Jamie is a board-certified acupuncturist by the NCCAOM, and a graduate of the Maryland University of Integrative Health with a Master’s in Acupuncture. She currently is pursuing her Doctorate in Oriental Medicine.
Jamie is an in-network provider for BlueCross/CareFirst, Aetna, and Cigna insurance. She is bilingual in English and Spanish.
As part of her own healing journey, Jamie discovered the benefits of Functional Medicine to support health and healing. As a result, she began to partner with the Academy of Integrative Medicine in order to offer this to her patients. As a student in the program, she already is providing this service to others with great success.
While Jamie treats people for a wide variety of conditions, she has special interest in fertility, pregnancy, pediatrics, autoimmune conditions and other chronic conditions. Jamie is a mom to a three year old little girl.
